Plot and Characters

A Complete Unknown* intertwines the story of a love triangle between Dylan, singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro), and Sylvie Russo (portrayed by Elle Fanning), inspired by Dylan’s real-life relationship with Suze Rotolo. Throughout the film, Chalamet performs “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” from Dylan’s 1963 album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

Behind the Scenes

According to the production team, the film chronicles Bob Dylan’s transformative journey from a traditional folk musician to a rock icon, highlighting his electrifying performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. This pivotal moment not only catapulted rock music into the voice of the youth but also became one of the most groundbreaking events in 20th-century music history. Directed by James Mangold and co-written with Jay Cocks, the project is based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book, Dylan Goes Electric. Filming began in March and concluded in July this year.

Reception and Controversy

While the film is eagerly awaited, some fans have expressed reservations about Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan. When images of Chalamet on set surfaced in March, reactions were mixed. One user on X commented, “He looks like he’s about to attend rock camp,” while another likened him to Fievel from the animated film An American Tail. Writer Marissa R. Moss remarked, “This is not Bob Dylan.”

Bob Dylan’s Legacy

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941, Bob Dylan is an influential American singer-songwriter whose work has profoundly impacted global popular music. Dylan’s songs are deeply intertwined with America’s political and social upheavals, providing a soundtrack to the nation’s historical moments. Classic hits like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” and “Like a Rolling Stone” have been covered by countless artists worldwide.
