Arizona Diamondbacks 2024 Player Review – Slade Cecconi

Arizona Diamondbacks 2024 Player Review - Slade Cecconi

Slade Cecconi, a right-handed pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, had an inconsistent 2024 season after a mixed performance in 2023. Initially expected to show improvement, Cecconi was called up due to injuries to key pitchers like Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen. However, his season was marked by struggles both as a starter and reliever.

Struggles as a Starter

Cecconi began the season with six starts, including two quality outings. However, he posted a 6.12 ERA over the next four starts, leading to a demotion to Triple-A Reno. His return in late May, after Gallen’s hamstring injury, didn’t bring much improvement. By June, Cecconi had a 5.40 ERA over six starts, with some strong performances mixed with poor ones. He was sent back to Triple-A in July after back-to-back rough starts.

Transition to Relief Role

The Diamondbacks experimented with Cecconi in a relief role due to his struggles in the rotation. As a reliever, he showed early promise, throwing two scoreless innings against the Nationals. However, he quickly regressed, struggling with command and posting a 10.13 ERA as a reliever. His season ultimately ended with a 5.75 ERA as a starter and a 10.13 ERA in relief appearances.

2025 Outlook

Cecconi’s potential remains notable, with a fastball reaching 97-98 MPH. However, his inconsistencies in both roles make his future with the Diamondbacks uncertain. He likely won’t be part of the D-backs’ 2025 starting rotation and will need to refine his skillset to secure a position in the bullpen. While still valuable for his raw talent, Cecconi’s immediate future in the majors is unclear unless the team faces injuries or requires additional pitching depth.
