Bobby Orr Defends Don Cherry

Hockey legend Bobby Orr has stepped up to defend his former coach, Don Cherry, calling the analyst’s firing from Hockey Night in Canada a “disgrace.” Orr, the former Boston Bruins player who played under Cherry for two seasons, expressed his disappointment in a recent interview with WEEI Radio in Boston. “I know Grapes better than anyone,” Orr said. “He’s not prejudiced; he’s not racist. This guy is one of the most generous, caring guys that I know. What they’ve done to him is disgraceful.”

Controversial Comments

Cherry was let go on Monday after comments he made during Coach’s Corner on Saturday night, where he lamented that people in Toronto were not wearing poppies to honor Canada’s fallen soldiers ahead of Remembrance Day. Cherry commented, “You people… you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey.” He added, “At least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy or something. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.” His comments were seen as a criticism of immigrants, leading Sportsnet to label his remarks as “divisive.Bobby Orr Calls Don Cherry's Firing Shameful

Cherry’s Response

After his firing, Cherry appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News, where he suggested his dismissal was related to his choice of words, saying he used “you people” instead of “everybody.” Orr weighed in on the situation, saying, “I guess this is a new world. Freedom of speech doesn’t matter anymore.”

Orr’s Legacy and Support for Cherry

Bobby Orr, an eight-time Norris Trophy winner and a 1979 Hall of Fame inductee, has become a prominent figure in the sport. He and Cherry also worked together as coaches in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Speaking about Cherry, Orr said, “I spoke with him the other day, and Grapes will be fine. He’s getting nice calls from friends in Boston. He’s getting support. He’s hurt, but he’ll be okay.”
