Diamondbacks Place Zac Gallen on Injured List Due to Hamstring Strain

The Arizona Diamondbacks are dealing with a major setback as Zac Gallen, their ace pitcher, has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right hamstring. This injury comes at a tough time for the team, which is already facing a five-game losing streak and is seven games below .500 in the standings.

Zac Gallen’s Impact on the Diamondbacks

Zac Gallen has been a standout performer for the Diamondbacks this season, with a 5-4 record and a 3.12 ERA. He has been a crucial part of the team’s pitching rotation, finishing in the top five of NL Cy Young Award voting in the past two years and earning an All-Star selection in 2023. His injury is a significant blow to Arizona’s pitching staff. However, Manager Torey Lovullo remains optimistic, noting that Gallen’s injury appears to be a Grade 1 hamstring strain, the least severe type, which could lead to a quicker recovery. Gallen previously dealt with a similar injury in July 2021, missing two weeks at the time.

Slade Cecconi to Fill In for Zac Gallen

To fill the gap left by Gallen, the Diamondbacks have recalled Slade Cecconi from Triple-A Reno. Cecconi is set to start against the New York Mets on Saturday. However, his season has been challenging, with a 1-4 record and a 6.12 ERA in five starts for the Diamondbacks earlier this year, adding more pressure to the pitching staff.

Additional Pitching Challenges for the Diamondbacks

The loss of Zac Gallen only adds to the Diamondbacks’ existing pitching woes, as the team is also without Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez due to shoulder injuries. Despite these challenges, Manager Lovullo stressed the importance of pushing forward and staying focused on their goals.

Injured Players Making Progress

While Gallen’s injury is a significant concern, the Diamondbacks are seeing some positive signs from their injured players. Geraldo Perdomo, the team’s All-Star shortstop, is recovering from a right meniscus tear and is expected to play in a minor league rehab game soon. Additionally, Miguel Castro, who is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, is scheduled for throwing sessions, signaling hope for his return.

Looking Ahead: Playoff Hopes for Arizona

As the Diamondbacks navigate these challenges, they remain hopeful for a swift recovery for Zac Gallen and the other injured players. The team’s goal is to get back on track and stay in the playoff race despite the current setbacks.
