George Strait Thanks Wife at 2024 CMAs, Receives Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award

At the 2024 CMA Awards, country music legend George Strait was honored with the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Taking the stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 20, Strait, known as the “King of Country,” expressed deep gratitude to fans, colleagues, and family—especially his wife, Norma Strait, who has supported him for nearly 53 years.

Strait’s Heartfelt Speech and Thanks to His Family

The 72-year-old country star began by thanking the CMAs for adding his name to the elite list of artists who have received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. He also praised the tribute performances from artists like Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton. In his speech, Strait made a special mention of his wife, Norma, acknowledging her unwavering support throughout their 53 years of marriage, adding, “It’s been an amazing 53 years, too.”

Strait’s Career Legacy

Strait’s career is one of unparalleled success. Over the course of four decades, he has released over 30 platinum or multi-platinum records, 60 No. 1 singles, and is the only artist in history to have a Top 10 hit every year for over 30 years. In 2024, he released his 31st studio album, Cowboys and Dreamers, and broke a record for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history, with over 110,000 attendees.

Tributes and Performances

Before his speech, several country stars performed Strait’s iconic hits in tribute. Lainey Wilson kicked off the evening with “Amarillo By Morning,” followed by Jamey Johnson performing “Give It Away.” Later, Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum teamed up for “Troubadour.” Strait also shared the stage with Chris Stapleton, where they performed “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame”.

Strait’s career is decorated with numerous accolades, including 16 Grammy nominations and 17 CMA Awards, making him the most-nominated artist in the history of the CMA Awards. He is a three-time Entertainer of the Year winner, recognized in 1989, 1990, and 2013. Sarah Trahern, CEO of the CMA, expressed that Strait’s contributions have significantly shaped country music, calling him an “inspiration and icon” for both established and new artists.

The 58th Annual CMA Awards aired live from Nashville on Nov. 20 and celebrated the achievements of the country music community, with Strait’s recognition as one of the event’s major highlights.
