Istanbul: The city ruled by cats

Istanbul, a city straddling both Europe and Asia, captivates visitors with its rich blend of cultures and countless architectural masterpieces. But what really sets this city apart is its charm for cat lovers—it’s a place where cats reign supreme.

Istanbul: The city ruled by cats

“If the Earth were a single country, Istanbul would be its capital,” French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte declared of this unique city spanning two continents. Istanbul, Türkiye, is a must-see destination for those who are passionate about exploring the diverse culture and history, exploring every corner of this vibrant city.

When I arrived in Istanbul, I let my curiosity guide me through the city’s winding streets and hidden alleys, with my camera as my faithful companion. The ancient, majestic domes stand like proud pages of history, telling stories about the glorious past of the Ottoman Empire. Cobblestone streets, echoing through time, lead me to bustling artist neighborhoods and vibrant markets, where the cacophony of sounds blend into a symphony of everyday life. Under the golden summer sun, sparkling like silk strips, every roof and every street seems to be painted in a warm color. I wandered through a spice market, then found myself standing among stalls selling intricate handicrafts, colorful carpets, and unique souvenirs—later I learned that this was the Grand Bazaar famous.

Sometimes I spend ten days straight in Sultan Ahmed Square or a whole day at Galata Tower, completely immersed in the local atmosphere.

Kingdom of cats

Cats are the unofficial rulers of Istanbul. They are considered among the city’s oldest residents and are extremely loved by the locals. People affectionately call them “kedi” and provide them with food, water, small shelters during harsh winters and cardboard beds during hot summers. They are even taken to the vet regularly. I have never felt any fear or distance between humans and cats here. These “miniature tigers” are everywhere – in restaurants, classrooms, offices, parks, street corners and sleeping on windowsills. They come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. They also enjoy some unique “perks,” such as requesting a seat or requesting privacy.

I often go to cafes, listen to jazz music and enjoy traditional pastries, while playful cats tug at my laptop’s charging cord, climb into my lap and eagerly join in my conversations. I. With such a strong presence of cats, isn’t it time we call this city by its real name “Catstanbul”?

Istanbul offers a magical experience to all who visit, especially cat lovers. Come and discover why this city, where East meets West, is also home to the hearts of its furriest residents.
