Maple Leafs Clear Cap Space with Liljegren Trade, Shifts Focus to Roster Needs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have resolved the month-long speculation around defenseman Timothy Liljegren, trading him and his $3-million contract to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange, the Maple Leafs picked up defenseman Matt Benning (carrying a more affordable $1.25 million cap hit) and future draft picks—a third-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick in 2026. This trade frees up critical cap space, allowing the Leafs more financial flexibility to make further adjustments to their lineup.

Addressing Inconsistencies: Center Depth & Marner’s Contract

With the cap space available, Toronto may address their need for a solid second-line center. Although a trade could be the solution, the Leafs may wait until closer to the March 7 trade deadline to find the right player. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Mitch Marner’s contract as his current deal nears its end. If Marner demands more than $11 million per season, some analysts, including Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, believe it might be time to explore a trade, especially if his postseason performance doesn’t improve. However, Marner’s no-movement clause presents a significant hurdle for any trade consideration.

Spotlight on Nick Robertson’s Future

With Liljegren traded, attention could turn to Nick Robertson, the young winger who was reportedly interested in a trade during the offseason. Despite a productive preseason, Robertson’s regular-season performance has been more subdued, with just one goal in nine games. After being a healthy scratch against the Winnipeg Jets, his position on the team remains uncertain. Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports that Robertson remains positive, focused on working his way back into the lineup. Still, if he continues to see limited game time, trade speculation could reignite.

Maple Leafs’ Current Season Record & Upcoming Games

The Leafs currently hold a 5-4-1 record as they prepare for their Halloween matchup against the Seattle Kraken. Their inconsistent start has seen strong victories against top teams like the Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils, offset by losses to rebuilding teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets. With recent roster changes, the Leafs hope to establish a more consistent form as they push forward in the season.
