Covering an area of over 50 square kilometers, the fortress walls are a testament to ancient architectural prowess, standing 2 meters thick and reaching heights of up to 12 meters. In addition to the impressive fortifications, the site is dotted with uniquely shaped rock formations. These rock formations are so distinctive that locals have named them based on their appearances, such as Adam and Eve, the Velko Rebel, Dervish, and the Goddess Bendida.

The Rich History of Belogradchik Fortress

Also known as Kaleto Fortress, Belogradchik has stood the test of time since its origins in ancient Roman times, specifically between the 1st and 3rd centuries. It was during this period that the Roman Empire sought to expand its network of fortifications across much of the Balkan Peninsula.

Historical records highlight Belogradchik Fortress as a significant landmark closely associated with the mighty Ottoman Empire. The fortress played a crucial role in suppressing the Ottoman influence in 1850 and was later utilized during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885.

The Legends Surrounding Belogradchik

Belogradchik Fortress is shrouded in myth and legend, adding a layer of mystique to its already awe-inspiring presence. One of the most famous legends involves a rock formation resembling a person sitting in deep contemplation. This rock is said to represent a nun who, according to ancient lore, was cast out of her monastery along with her child. Shortly after, a great flood swept away the monastery, and the nun and her child were turned to stone.

Another fascinating legend surrounds a rock formation known as the Maiden. This story tells of a beautiful young woman who fell in love with a blacksmith. Unfortunately, her love attracted the envy of a malevolent sorcerer. During a festival, the sorcerer pursued the young maiden, intending to force her into marriage. In her terror, she fled into the forest, only to encounter a fearsome bear. Faced with the choice of marrying the sorcerer or being devoured by the bear, she chose death. However, as the bear attacked, the sky darkened, and when daylight returned, all three were turned to stone.

These are just a few of the many mystical legends and folklore tales tied to the majestic Belogradchik Fortress. Through centuries of turmoil and change, the fortress has stood tall on its towering limestone cliffs, bearing witness to the passage of time and history. Today, it remains one of Bulgaria’s most captivating tourist attractions.
