Ocean Sunfish: the most inanimate fish in the ocean

Ocean Sunfish, scientifically known as Mola mola, is a notable representative of the Molidae family, belonging to the order puffer fish. The word “Mola” is Latin for “mill”, referring to the nearly round shape of this species. Although in many languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and Russian, it is called the “Sunfish”, in English the species is called “Ocean Sunfish”. The name comes from the belief that these fish bask near the ocean’s surface, as they are often seen swimming slowly near the surface of the water.

Most of the time, the ocean sunfish lets its large body float freely along the water. Adult ocean sunfish are often found drifting sideways, a behavior that has earned them a reputation as one of the most “clueless” species in the ocean. When they float near the ocean surface to bask in the sun, they do almost nothing. Even if other species live parasitically or even attack, they will not react because they do not have pain receptors.

Ocean currents can carry them from tropical seas to temperate zones, and they can even wash ashore without them caring about it. This explains why Mola mola can be found in most seas around the world. Their mindlessness has made them easy targets for natural predators and human hunters, leading to a serious decline in their populations. Despite this, this species has existed for more than 45 million years. This longevity is largely due to their incredible reproductive ability. A female sunfish can lay more than 300 million eggs in just three weeks, making them one of the most prolific species in the ocean.

Data indicate that ocean sunfish is now listed in the Red Book and is an endangered species. Classified as category R, they require urgent protection. Catching and exploiting this species is strictly prohibited by law. Due to their large size and economic value, they are often easily detected and captured, which puts them at greater risk.

Because of their unique shape and rarity, Ocean Sunfish are also considered valuable specimens in marine life museums. Their distinctive appearance and gentle, almost passive nature have made them fascinating subjects of scientific study and an important part of ocean biodiversity. However, this mysterious fish drifts aimlessly through the world’s oceans, requiring significant protection to ensure its survival for future generations.

The story of Ocean Sunfish is not only one of survival but also of the need for human responsibility in preserving our marine ecosystem. Although they appear indifferent to their surroundings, their role in the ocean’s delicate balance should not be underestimated. Protecting these age-old fish is vital to maintaining biodiversity and ensuring that our oceans continue to thrive.
