Red Sox Catcher Danny Jansen Set to Make History by Playing for Both Teams in the Same Game

In an unprecedented event in Major League Baseball, Danny Jansen is set to become the first player to appear in the same game for two different teams. The Boston Red Sox catcher will achieve this unique milestone on Monday when he plays in the resumption of a suspended game against his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays.

The game, originally played on June 26, was suspended in the second inning due to rain. At that time, Jansen was on deck, ready to bat for the Blue Jays. The game was rescheduled to continue as part of a doubleheader on Monday, but by then, Jansen had been traded to the Red Sox on July 27.

Boston manager Alex Cora confirmed Jansen’s historic role, saying, “He’s catching. Let’s make history.” The rarity of this situation has even surprised Jansen himself. “I don’t know if it’s set in for me. It’s definitely a cool thing. Definitely grateful,” he remarked. “Honestly, when I heard about it, I didn’t think I would be the first. The game has been around for so long. It’s one of those oddities that happen in this sport. It’s extremely rare and cool.”

Before joining the Red Sox, Reese McGuire was Boston’s catcher during the June 26 game. However, following the trade for Jansen, McGuire was assigned to Triple-A Worcester, clearing the way for Jansen to step into this historic role.

Since joining the Red Sox, Jansen has been a solid contributor, batting .257 with two home runs in 13 games. Despite going hitless in four at-bats during Boston’s 12-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, Jansen remains an integral part of the team.

Monday’s resumption of the suspended game will not only be a continuation of an ordinary game but also a moment of baseball history, as Jansen’s appearance for both teams will mark a first in the sport’s long and storied history.
